Seeking a New Volunteer Treasurer

Date: 27th Sep 2025 Author: Ashley Russell

51st Bath Scouts is run entirely by volunteers – from the amazing adventures who lead our sections to the behind-the-scenes paragons who oversee our governance and administration. Each week, I am delighted to see the excitement of our Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts as they try new things, forge new friendships, and learn important skills for life. To deliver exceptional Scouting, centred on our values, needs a team. An important part of this team in our Group Treasurer, who makes sure we make the most of our financial resources.

We are looking for our next Group Treasurer to join the 51st Bath team, as our incumbent takes on new challenges. With healthy reserves and an appetite to spend our money on what matters, you would be joining a small charity that is careful but not frugal in its finances. In the last three years, we have ended our financial year with around £4-6k in reserves with a total year cashflow of around £10-12k.

How you can help us – we would like our Group Treasurer to:

  • Reconcile bank transactions in our Xero accounting software.
  • Manage correspondence from our bankers, Lloyds (very ad-hoc e.g. new cards, adding/removing signatories).
  • Review, approve, and arrange payment for volunteer expenses.
  • Produce financial figures for use at Board of Trustees meetings and our annual report.
  • Scrutinise our Group Lead Volunteer’s proposed annual budget and how well we keep to it.
  • Take an active part in our Board meetings as a Trustee.

We expect that this will take an hour or two per week in busier times, which reduces in school holidays.

Who we are looking for someone with:

  • Experience as a financial professional or as a manager with financial responsibility.
  • An understanding of charities is a plus.
  • A commitment to volunteer for three years (negotiable).
  • Willing to work in-line with our Scout values.

Please get in touch with our Lead Volunteer on info@51bathscouts.org.uk if you feel like you can help us in this way. He would be delighted to have a no-commitment chat about volunteering with you.

Your contributions to 51st Bath will ensure we can continue to deliver:

  • Weekly sessions for around 70 Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts each week, equipping them with skills for life.
  • Over 90 nights away a year, with a strong appetite to grow this. Giving our young people new experiences and embedding character skills like resilience and teamwork.

In return, you will:

  • Receive a strong sense of pride from volunteering.
  • Play an active part in your community.
  • Contribute to the success of the next generation.
  • Gain a broader understanding of voluntary organisations.
  • Build skills that will be transferrable across many areas of life.

Anyone wanting to volunteer in this role must not be disqualified from being a Charity Trustee. They must also be willing to complete mandatory training and a DBS check within 30 days of appointment.

The most worth-while thing is to try to put happiness into the lives of others” – Robert Baden-Powell, Founder of Scouting
