Success at Strategy
For several years now, 51st Bath Scouts has attended Strategy (for Scouts) and its sister event Evolution (for Cubs). This year, we also took our Beavers along to a new event, Discovery.
Strategy and Evolution are both challenge events, meaning that teams compete against each other. Saturday is the challenge day. Scouts and Cubs head out into the woods of Cirencester Park in activities on bases, hiking between each base. Activities are as varied as they are spread out – from supermarket sweep to traditional Scouting skills. Favourites, though, often include fire lighting, inflatables, and zorbing!
The challenge is to not only get to as many bases as possible, but to do well in those bases. Doing well means working well as a team, solving problems, being willing, and sometimes a little skill. All of these solidify the skills for life that we grow and develop within Cubs and Scouts.
“The day in the woods is brilliant!” says Emily, a Scout with a broad smile. “You get to try so many things. Then, when you get back to camp, there’s loads of evening entertainment. A disco, a show, a café. It’s like a mini festival!”
51st Bath Scouts did particularly well at Strategy this year – with a top 30 finish for one of our teams and all teams coming in the top third!
Of course, camps like these don’t happen without volunteers. Volunteers from 51st Bath not only looked after our own Cubs and Scouts, but helped run the event too. They ran bases on the challenge day, ran sports competitions, and even served breakfast. That might sound like a lot of work, but was it worth it? “Yes” says Mikey, a volunteer with our Scouts, resoundingly. So there you go! Volunteers also get a lot out of Scouting, whether that is new experiences or a sense of pride in creating adventures for our young people.
